The Improvement of Land Governance in Uganda (ILGU) Project was implemented by Equiland Africana Foundation in Ngando and Bulo Sub Counties of Butambala District with support from German International Cooperation (GIZ) in partnership with the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development (MLHUD).
Seeking to increase productivity of small-scale farmers on private Mailo land in Central Uganda, the project focused on promoting secure land tenure, peaceful landlord-tenant relations, and improved land governance under the Mailo land tenure system.
Through community awareness campaigns, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), landlord profiling, capacity building, and fit-for-purpose land mapping and documentation, the project strengthened community understanding of land rights and responsibilities while reducing land-related conflicts.
The project adopted a participatory and community-centered approach involving district local governments, Area Land Committees, local leaders, religious and cultural leaders, and community members to promote harmonious coexistence and improved tenure security.
ILGU Project is part of the Responsible Land Policy in Uganda (RELAPU) initiative under the Global Programme on Responsible Land Policy and co-financed by the European Union and German Government through the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
